In the third of our series Mark looks at ‘Successful Leadership’. Mark Stewart has represented Scotland and Great Britain in road and track cycling. He’s a Commonwealth Games gold medal winner and twice European champion. Leading by being open & inclusive is an essential element of any successful leader. This time, Mark Stewart shares with us the importance of good leadership. Good leaders start with actively listening. You can then reflect what you think you are hearing. As a leader people are watching and emulating your behaviours. Think of the expression that, “Calm (and any other behaviour) is contagious,” so be conscious of what image or behaviour you project. Seize the opportunity to publicly praise positive behaviours. Ask questions first and lead second. Demonstrate empathy before acting – ask, “What do we think is happening?” What do we need to do? Focus on what’s right, not who’s right.
